“Living and Dying With the Choices I Made”

He is regarded as one of the greatest country music legends of all time.  George Jones was born on September 12, 1931 and passed away on April 26, 2013.  Though throughout his music career his songs were the stereotypical drinking and cheating that is often associated with this genre of music.  And it also was no secret that George Jones had a drug, alcohol and woman problem.

But his world was turned upside down on March 6, 1999 when he crashed his SUV head on into a bridge abutment. Cheating death George Jones ended up hospitalized and was in critical condition with a collapsed lung, severely ruptured liver and internal bleeding.  It turned out at the time of the crash George Jones was talking to his stepdaughter on the cell phone and later pleaded guilty to drunk driving related to the accident.

It was not the 1st time George Jones had issues with alcohol and drugs.  Many years of alcoholism caused his health to fall backwards severely.  His missed many performances which gave him a not very noble nickname “No Show Jones

After the help of his 4th wife Nancy Sepulvado after that serious 1999 crash George Jones changed and he became mostly sober.  His album release during this life change was “Cold Hard Truth”.  One song on that album is called “Choices” which has the line, “I’m Living and Dying With the Choices I Made”.  There is a sober truth to that song and the choices we make each day.

The scripture reading (which reminds me of that song) we will be looking at on February 12, 2017 is Deuteronomy 30:19-20.  “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you LIFE AND DEATH, BLESSING AND CURSES.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God. Listen to His voice and hold fast to him.

The choices that we make each day are DAILY exercises.  May we seek God each day for wisdom to make the right choices.
