My Identity

With the world population now over 7.5 billion a person can sometimes feel pretty insignificant.  And chances are there are more than one person in the world that carries the same name as you and me.

I did type in my name Carl Wright into Google and discovered there are 291 profiles of Carl Wright on LinkedIn alone. I am the president of an engineering company, a plant operator, an attorney.  I am a chief revenue officer and a retired police officer. I hold full time job positions in many parts of England, a full time job in New Zealand and also in India. I also own several businesses all over the world.  I am also a runner, lay pastor and warehouse worker in Ontario, Canada.

In my google search I discovered there are several obituaries written for me in different times over the last few decades and in different locations around the world.  The most prominent one was the Carl Wright the actor who passed away in in Chicago in 2007 at the age of 75. I am also found on the Mandy Network as an up and coming actor named Carl Wright from England.

Our personal identity is so very important and one of the most frightening things that could happen to a person is have our identities stolen.  Identity theft is at an all time high in Canada.

Our identity seems to be the greatest cultural question of our day.  Every decision society makes hinges on the issue of identity. And it kind of makes sense. As the line of morality is blurred more and more, we have lost the security we once had in absolute truth.  As Christians we are far too often left shaken, uncertain of who we are, what it means to follow Jesus, why we’re here, and even doubting what love really is.

In Matthew 16, Jesus is having a conversation about His identity with His disciples, and Jesus asked every one of them an all-important question. It starts off with “Who do people say I am?”. And then He closes with, “Who do you say I am?”

Jesus didn’t ask the question because He was self-conscience about what people thought or because He was on the verge of some mid-life crisis struggling to find Himself. I’m sure the jeers of society probably hurt, but He didn’t ask for His ego to be boosted, or even to be comforted. He asked them for the same reason He asks us. He desires to reveal His glory to us, He desires to reveal His truth to us, He desires to give us life.   Nowadays this has not changed a bit. People will have a lot of various opinions of who Jesus is.  But who do you say Jesus is? It’s life’s biggest question. Knowing God is paramount to finding out why He made you and who He means for you to be.

Knowing Christ for who He is gives my identity a whole new meaning. Jesus is the one who establishes my identity. In Christ we are saved, free, adopted, His masterpiece, blameless AND so much more.

  1. I read the book few days back – A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. A passage there really caught my eye and really appreciate the wonder that I am alive and I exist – The fact that my (and our) ancestors have fought the odds over millions of ears, survived, mated and lived on so that we could exist. It puts a perspective, that even if it’s just evolution, we are an important part.

    • Thank you for taking the time to read and for sharing this Prajakta. Always love your comments. Only in these past few years that I have become interested in ancestry and the insights you have shared are really profound. I can only go back a few generations, but this fight to survive and live on goes for so many generations before. Living and breathing and just being alive is such an incredible wonder. Not in an ego sort of way Prajakta we are really so amazing.

Thank you again. Hope you have a WONDERFUL week! 🙂
